Emergency
Rescue, in partnership with the Federal Road Safety Corps, (FRSC) Lagos, has
trained 16 FRSC officers on medical emergency rescue skills, in the bid to
reduce road fatalities in the country.
The focus of the training was on
cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) of unconscious accident victims before any
medical response on the scene. According to the Sector Head of Operation, Lagos
Sector Command, Mr. Olapade Michael Olusegun, the agency found the exercise
important, as its officers are usually called during road crashes. So, with the
training, the officers are better equipped to handle unconscious accident
victims, which would help reduce road accidents deaths.
Olusegun, during the presentation of certificates
to the trainees Said that the programme would also support FRSC to achieve its
mission of reducing road fatalities by 50 per cent in 2020.
He said the exercise has been informative and educative, as it has exposed officers to how to save victims during emergency, instead of aggravating their injuries at the scene of accident.
Medical Director, Emergency Rescue,
organisers of the training, Dr. Kayode Solomon, explained that the training is
relevant, because during road accidents, the closest people are mostly FRSC
officers.
“Other agencies, such as the Military,
Customs, Police and Fire Service officers also need it, because they could be
the first people at an emergency scene.”
He regretted that most government
agencies do not respond positively to requests to be trained, even for free. He
urged government to place more priority on emergency responses, since its
primary purpose is to safe lives.
