The Pan-Yoruba socio- cultural group, Afenifere has called on President Mohammadu to within the remaining few days left to the end of the three months in acting capacity of Justice Nkanu Onnoghen, forward his name to Senate for confirmation as Chief Justice of Nigeria.
The
group, at a meeting held in Akure, the Ondo State capital on
Tuesday, also asked the federal government to constitute a committee
that will dialogue with other ethnic nationality to discourse a possible way of
restructuring the country.
The
meeting which was attended by Chief Reuben Fasoranti, Governor Olusegun Mimiko,
Chief Ayo Adebanjo, Chief Olu Falae, Senator Mojisoluwa Akinfenwa, Chief Bode
George and Senator Iyiola Omisore also sought for the unity of the race
irrespective of political, religion and social background.
Others
present at the meeting includes: Senator Omololu Meroyi, Otunba Gbenga Kaka,
Mr. Kole Omololu, Chief Cornelius Adebayo, Prof. Banji Akintoye, Prince
Dayo Adeyeye, Dr. Akin Onigbinde, Chief Supo Sonibare, Mr. Tokunbo Ajasin,
Basorun Sehinde Arogbofa among others.
Reading
the communiqué after about five hours meeting, the group spokesperson, Mr Yinka
Odumakin, said the report of 2014 National conference, if implemented will have
tackled the problems threatening the existence of the country.
In
the communiqué, Afenifere expressed worry over what they described as mass
killing in Southern Kaduna, Middle Belt communities, Igboland, in Oke-Ogun in
Oyo State and different parts of the country where there were clashes between
herdsmen and farmers.
According
to Odumakin, “Meeting was elated that Yoruba has closed ranks as witnessed in
historic gathering which represents a new beginning for the Yoruba nation. It
is high time the Yoruba nation must put aside partisan differences and come
together and make Yorubaland and redirect the affairs of Nigeria the way the
Yoruba did in the years before independence when we worked with our friends in
Nigeria to negotiate federal constitution which brought our independence.
“Meeting
observed that the state of Nigeria at the moment is very frightening and
worrying and uncertainty loom in the air. We are worried by the mass killing
going on in Southern Kaduna and allover Nigeria and the states appeared to be
helpless and sometimes unwilling to curb the excess of these killers as
evidence in a governor who pronounced it to the whole country that those who
kill our citizens are paid.
“Meeting
expressed worry that Nigeria today lie prostrate in the intensive care of sick
countries because we have refused to run Nigeria; the multi-ethnic state along
federal lines.
“Meeting
resolved to set up a high power committee to rouse Yoruba nation and to network
with our friends and like minds across Nigeria to work on the urgency of now to
insist that this country must be restructured before we go for another election
in this country because we cannot afford to continue to slide dangerously on
the part of anarchy.
“The
main focus is to get all hands on deck for the mobilization towards the
implementation of the recommendation of the 2014 National Conference which was
submitted to the Federal Executive Council that is the minimum we demand.
“Acting
CJN, Nkanu Onnoghen. Afenifere was worried that almost few days to the
expiration of the three months tenure in acting capacity allowed by our
constitution, the President has refused to forward the recommendations of NJC
to the National Assembly for confirmation.
“We
see this as an assault on the constitution if the three months expire and he is
not confirmed as CJN of Nigeria. It will be an assault on our constitution and
an attempt to crudely end a carrier of a worthy Nigerian. Therefore we call on
Mr President to within the few days left to the expiration of the acting tenure
of Justice Onnoghen send his name to the Senate for confirmation as Nigeria CJN
as he is the man in line because that is what the constitution says. “
