Burkina Faso defeated Ghana 1-0 to win
bronze at the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations third place match at the Stade
Port-Gentil in Gabon on Saturday night.
A thunderous free-kick from Alain
Traore in the 87th minute of the encounter condemned Ghana to a fourth defeat a
third-place match.
The Black Stars in the past had lost to
Zambia in 1996, and Mali twice in 2012 and 2013 in third-place matches while
their only victory was against Ivory Coast in 2008.
Ghana were the better side on the night
but failed to make any of the scoring chances count as they squandered the
opportunities created.
Ghana had the first chance in the fifth
minute when skipper Agyeman Badu missed a header from close range after a great
cross from the left flank.
The Blacks Stars also saw Bernhard
Tekpetey header crash the upright in the 26th minute.
In the 32nd minute Jordan Ayew forced
another save from Herve Koffi in goal for Burkina Faso.
In the second half, Burkina Faso stayed
cautious until the dying minutes of the game when Traore beat Richard Ofori
from 30 yards with a fabulous free kick.
It was Burkina Faso’s first ever win in a
third place match. They had lost to DR Congo in the third place match in 1998.
